Try a fresh Thai basil curried rice with fresh grated ginger and turmeric, black pepper and a dash of 5 Spice… I like to use the rice cooker in a similar way to a Crock Pot, not that it takes all day, but is a prepared meal from a single pot. Layer what you would like in with your rice, maybe onion and peppers, potato and carrot, cashew and raisens and chopped fresh wholesome spices. It is a great way to have leftover (well marinated) curry pot for breakfast, just stir fry with some scrambled eggs, or how I like it, with a fried egg on top. Garnish with a flourish of the Thai basil and, voila! Beautiful, nutritious and delicious!

While building from this week’s CSA ingredients, I find all I need to add to this grocery list is a dozen eggs. The greens and herbs can be used to make a quiche, frittata, or homemade pasta as well as enjoyed raw alongside a meal, in a sandwich or even a wrap. Two to three eggs and the butternut, roasted and pureed, becomes the base for a “pumpkin” pie (the flavor and consistency is more of how we dream of for pumpkin pie, try it! Great substitute). Any greens and herbs can also be frozen, in a paste, or chopped to add to later dishes such as lentils, stews, curries and pot pies.
And of course, these are all packed with flavorful aromatic medicinal healing qualities…just check out the antimicrobial activities of herbs and essential oils…blows my mind sometime how we miss that the kitchen cupboard is also the medicine chest.

Killing Frost this weekend -it’s already less than 30F as we pack up this evening – lots of winter squash along with the peppers and eggplant.
Turmeric and Tomatoes are added to the box just before pickup or selected from the display at the market.
Poultry Herbs and dill this week along with the last harvest of peppers and yellow summer squash.
Watercress is one of the world’s healthiest foods…from the way we grow the watercress to the way we cut and chill it, great care is given to create the most potentiality for taste and nutrition. Known for being a peppery, dark, leafy green that grows with a wet foot along creeks and ditches, we bring it up off the ground and grow it on benches…it cascades over the sides, looking for more footing.
Harvesting Turmeric as the season turns cold – a great healing rhizome with anti-inflammatory properties.

A different herb for you to try this week: Chervil. “Chervil is used, particularly in France to season poultry, seafood, vegetable soups and sauces. More delicate than parsley, it has a faint taste of licorice or aniseed. Chervil is one of the four traditional French fines herbs, along with tarragon, chives, and parsley, which are essential to French cooking. Unlike the more pungent, robust herbs, thyme, rosemary, etc., which can take prolonged cooking, the fines herbs are added at the last minute, to salads, omeletes, and soups.” (partial quote from Wikipedia page).

This herb brought a happy smile to my face whilst i was hiking high in Western New Mexico…the excruciating altitude change had brought on a massive headache and i sought comfort in shaded wet rocks along a creek run. There nestled calmly and absolutely was the watercress. What a refief to see such a welcome plant from home! I checked up stream and around about, found the land to be in use for cattle, probably a land management deal, and set about getting a clean cut. That cut was just magnificent. With time, water, watercress and rest i was able to move onward.

Well, it looks like we might have the killing frost tonight (Friday night) so do consider storing your eggplant as a dried pasta replacement or maybe baba ganoush frozen for a later date.
